Kayak More Tomorrow’s 2017 annual hiring interview & workshop - Ålesund, Norway April 06 – 09, 2017 

To be considered for a KMT sea kayak guide position attendance is mandatory!
KMT’s hiring interview & workshop is an intense 4-day interview session during which you will interact with other applicants and Kayak More Tomorrow staff in a variety of exercises that involve problem solving, teamwork, sea kayak mechanics and a little bit of public speaking, as well a brief sea kayak technical skills assessment will be conducted. It’s challenging and a lot of fun.

The cost of travel to and your stay in Ålesund during the KMT’s hiring interview & workshop is the sole responsibility of each applicant.

Kayak More Tomorrow will be holding a hiring interview & workshop in England during the late winter of 2017.

If you are interested in attending our KMT hiring interview & workshop in England, then your application must be submitted to KMT a min. of 6 weeks prior to the UK hiring interview & workshop.

Kayak More Tomorrow’s UK hiring interview & workshop takes place in London from: March, 02 – 05, 2017

    • What are your thoughts on handling the pressure of a stressful situation?
    • In your opinion is this statement true or false? Explain. - walking up to a situation and seeing what needs to be done is a very specialized skill and only required of a team leader.
    • Can you describe in detail the process a guide would use when coming to shore with a group of sea kayakers; what actions a guide would take immediately after a group of clients has come ashore for a lunch break during a day trip?
    • In your experience relate the challenges of leading, instructing and mentoring paddlers and guide course paddlers
    • On a multi-day trip, the optimum time to launch off the beach in morning can vary; it is the responsibility of a KMT sea kayak guide to do the calculations. How have you handled this?

Also, a short video introduction will help our Hiring Team get to know you better than through bullets on your resume and/or a short video demonstrating your paddling skills. These are optional, but preferred.

2. Attend KMT’s annual hiring interview & workshop

Note: If you do not currently hold a Wilderness First Responder/ CPR certification valid through October 2017, please get certified prior to arriving as this certification is mandatory for KMT Sea Kayak Guides.

A KMT sea kayak guide is responsible for:

  • managing head guide on all KMT sea kayak trips
  • instructing sea kayak courses and PT sessions
  • training guides
  • teaching and instructing at KMT’s guide school
  • general operations at the sea kayak center
  • assisting the center manager with managerial duties

A IFSKGIA certification is a measure of quality; it is clear that all those who paddle with a guide will notice the immense difference of highly qualified IFSKGIA guides to those ‘guides’ who have little to no qualifications.


KMT Expectations:
A KMT Sea Kayak guide has the necessary training, experience, skills and abilities to provide the KMT standard of service to all KMT clients; is an expert sea kayaker with the highest international level of on-water paddling skills and abilities.

Kayak More Tomorrow has a clear and unwavering expectation that any and all sea kayak guides have extensive experience, training and practice in the following areas:

  • Gear care, maintenance, repair and cleaning
  • Unflawed customer interaction and service
  • Guiding sea kayak trips safely in all weather conditions and sea states
  • Instructing sea kayak lessons from beginner to advanced paddling skills; including speciality classes such as, for example Eskimo Rolling, Surfing, etc.
  • Teaching, instructing, training and mentoring participants in KMT’s guide school
  • To have an understanding and the knowledge of a guide’s workload on any type of trip
  • To gain local knowledge: a guide is expected to familiarize himself with all the coastal waterways he/she will be guiding on and to get to know what to expect in terms of weather, winds, tides and currents, etc. It is expected that this knowledge is acquired at the expense of the sea kayak guide; should be done prior to the start of the paddling season. At no time will Kayak More Tomorrow provide a sea kayak guide familiarization/exploratory time during the season.

A KMT sea kayak guide is expected to provide KMT’s quality and standards when working with clients, guides & guide school participants; it is expected that a KMT sea kayak guide will set a good example in all situations.

The role of a KMT sea kayak guide is as demanding as it is rewarding.


The Job

KMT sea kayak guide

A KMT sea kayak guide has authority and provides leadership. They provide unsurpassed customer service as well as teach and mentor up and coming guides. 

For a KMT sea kayak guide there is no "typical" day, although there is a plan for each day, each day is unique. Surprises, challenges and opportunities come up all the time. There are, however, many principles and routines that guests expect when paddling with Kayak More Tomorrow; for many, the nimble combination of stability and flexibility is what keeps them paddling with us time and time again.

KMT sea kayak guides are confident and comfortable leading these programs:

  • Lead guide on multi-day sea kayak trips
  • Lead guide on day trips
  • Lead guide on cruise excursions
  • Lead instructor for KMT lessons (PT)
  • Teaching/Educating and providing training/guidance at KMT’s guide school
  • Assisting the manager at a KMT sea kayak center


Duties and Responsibilities of a KMT Sea Kayak Guide:
Outlined below are the areas of KMT operations with duties and responsibilities required of KMT sea kayak guide:

Sea kayak guides will ensure that the Kayak More Tomorrow standard is upheld at all times when guiding and while working at a KMT sea kayak center.

Kayak More Tomorrow overnight trips & kayak holidays

A sea kayak guide shall lead these trips in a responsible fashion this entails the following; risk management for ensuring a safe and well planned trip, co-ordinating the work load of the trip between the assistant and lead guide (when working with an assistant), ensuring a good atmosphere among the trip’s guides, paying particular attention to cost management and the trip budget, and most of all being responsible for customer satisfaction. A sea kayak guide is required to lead his/her trips in a safe and responsible manner.

These points outline the most important aspects of a sea kayak guides’ duties & responsibilities on an overnight trip:

  • Route planning and leading
  • Meal preparation
  • Camp/kitchen set-up and clean-up
  • Co-ordinating trip logistics; for example, transportation, food, accommodation, cultural visits
  • Being responsible for safety and risk management on the trip
  • Trip preparation including organising and packing equipment, shopping for and packing of groceries
  • Trip clean-up; this includes cleaning and maintenance of all equipment as well as the support van and trailers
  • Detailing special client needs and incorporating then in the day to day trip plan
  • Financial management; keeping expenses within the trip budget


Kayak More Tomorrow day trips & outfitting program

Sea kayak guides shall lead sea kayak day trips which include hiking, interpretations, cultural visits, and lunch. They will also oversee KMT’s sea kayak outfitting program

Day Trips
These points outline the most important aspects of a sea kayak guides’ duties & responsibilities on a day trip:

  • Co-ordinating trip logistics; for example, transportation, food, accommodation, cultural visits
  • Being responsible for safety and risk management on the trip
  • Trip preparation including organising and packing equipment, shopping for and preparing lunch/ drinks, etc.
  • Trip clean-up; this includes cleaning and maintenance of all equipment as well as the support van and trailers
  • Detailing special client needs and incorporating then in the day trip plan
  • Financial management; keeping expenses within the trip budget

Outfitting
Sea Kayak guides will ensure that Kayak More Tomorrow’s outfitting clients receive the value and service that they have purchased when booking their sea kayak outfitting program

  • Outfitting preparation including: organising and packing equipment, shopping for and packing of groceries
  • Client orientation: includes – route details, expected tides & currents, navigation, emergency pullouts/evacuation, communication procedures, and end/pickup times, etc.
  • Trip clean-up; this includes cleaning and maintenance of all equipment as well as the support van and trailers
  • Transport Service – driving clients and/or equipment as required by the specifics of each individual outfitting program
  • Financial management; keeping expenses within the outfitting budget


Kayak More Tomorrow’s sea kayak centres

Sea Kayak guides will be required to work at KMT sea kayak centres. The areas of operation in which they will be required to work may include the follow: 

  • sea kayak instruction PT sessions
  • guide cruise ship passenger excursions
  • Teaching, instructing, training and mentoring participants of KMT’s guide school (applies to KMT Ålesund only)
  • Sea kayak/SUP rental program
  • Cleaning & maintenance in and around the center
  • Managing monies; receiving payments from clients, etc…


The Physical Demands of a KMT sea kayak guide
Although the leadership, customer service and knowledge you provide to our guests is at the core of being a successful KMT sea kayak guide, you must also possess the basic physical skills to be able to paddle long distances and as well you must be able to hike any of the daily distances, while carrying a full daypack. Leading trips also involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting. For example, you will be trained to lift a kayak onto the top of the van/trailer. You are also expected to load and unload large pieces of luggage and or gear on a daily basis. In terms of mechanical skills, you must be able to learn how to repair kayaks, hitch a trailer to the van, drive a large vehicle confidently, etc.

Peak Season Availability
A KMT sea kayak guide must be able to work during our peak season which runs from May 1st through the end of September.
